Export lumber compliance to ISPM-15 standards
Ensuring that packaging for manufactured goods is compliant with export regulations presents distinct challenges. To guarantee that transportation packaging meets export compliance, it must fulfill specific requirements, including the appropriate stamps and documentation for the export lumber.
Wood packaging materials, such as dunnage, pallets, crates, reels, drums, and load boards made from softwoods and hardwoods, must adhere to these compliance regulations. Sourcing export lumber from a dependable supplier is essential to meet these regulations. Non-compliance can lead to products being held at the loading dock for prolonged periods or being returned at a considerable expense.
Export lumber is wood treated to meet international export rules and regulations. More than 85 countries have adopted the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15 (ISPM-15) for wood packaging and export lumber. Consequently, all export lumber, whether used for dunnage, load boards, or pallets, must undergo treatment as per ISPM-15 guidelines to prevent infestation.
The treatment for wood packaging and export lumber, which could be heat treatment or fumigation with methyl bromide, varies based on the export's nature and the destination country. All export lumber must also be debarked to conform to regulations. Once treated, the lumber receives a compliance stamp, signifying adherence to the required standards.
Export lumber must meet precise criteria to be deemed export compliant and to be awarded the ISPM15 stamp.
